This initial experience was extremely discouraging, and I dreaded holding more programs that residents would not show up for. I had never considered myself bad at interacting with other students, but I now wondered if I wasn’t the right fit for being a resident advisor. However, I refused to give in so early. I knew what a difference residential programs made for students and how its promise helped them withstand the stresses of college. I was committed to ensuring that my programs were a fun space and decided to consult my fellow resident advisors.
If you were to ask me a year ago what the purpose of a resident assistant is, I probably would have said “to be the parent of the dorm.” While in many ways this statement is true, I know now that an RA's role extends deeper than the statement portrays. My second year of living on campus has allowed me to observe a few of the overlooked duties of an RA such as updating residents on resources through bulletin boards and maintaining discipline by enforcing quiet hours. Summarizing just a few of my observations, I can confidentially say that an RA's responsibility as a "parent" includes maintaining good order in the residence hall, maintaining a positive living environment, and promoting academic, personal and social growth among students. Why do you want to be a Resident Assistant again next year? I want to be a RA next year again to keep improving the lives of students on campus through building community, planning programs, and being available to residents. First I want to build community by making everyone in my house feel welcome and appreciated. Welcoming starts on move in day and continues throughout the year with conversations and having an open.
If I was to become an RA, I would like to build connections with both my residents and my fellow Resident Assistants by holding events and working to build a diverse, caring community. I think connection can have a big effect on the RA staff as connection leads to better teamwork and collaboration, meaning the RA staff would work together more cohesively and thus make the experience of the residents more enjoyable. Building connections with and between your residents can have a very positive effect, as not only will they have a support system in place, they will also have a safe place to find friends, learn about differences among people, and find their place within the Geneseo community. I care about providing the best holistic healthcare I possibly can for my patients through evidence-based practice. I respect individuals’ race, socioeconomic class, gender, and sexual orientation. I work well with others and I strive to help create a good working environment where people can communicate, ask questions, learn new information, and feel respected. With this New Graduate Nurse Residency Program, I hope to be exposed to many different clinical situations. I hope to further develop my clinical leadership skills and to gain new knowledge.
My family has always taught me to help people out when they need it and reach out because you never know what situation they have been through. When I see someone who is in pain, needs a friend to talk to, or needs help; therefore, I will be there. I love helping and seeing how thankful different individuals are. Helping the residents helped me become more of an adult because I learned how to treat them and how they like to be treated like, as an adult. They want to do everything they possibly can, it’s great to encourage them to do so.
I am interested in continuing to serve in Residence life as senior staff because I want to help new RAs feel like they belong, grow and improve Residence Life, and to challenge myself to perpetuate growth. One of my personal strengths is connecting with people on an individual level. Connecting with people on an individual level is very important to me, during an Imposter syndrome lecture, the speaker mentioned “A sense of belonging fosters confidence”. This really resonated with me, my goal would be to connect with the RAs on my staff and within ResLife to help the RA’s feel like they belonged. Their confidence and thus their ability to build a community would increase.
A mentor in nursing is defined as someone who can facilitate learning, supervise and asses nursing students in a practice setting. This in turn produces efficient and effective students who become competent and will have mastered the craft and art of caring. Mentorship is significant to students as it helps students develop their professional identities, attributes and competence and also enables students to learn through the creation of the supportive working and learning environment as an individual (Clutterbuck 2004). Decisions taken by mentors in assessing students have significant impacts on securing the nursing workforce in the future. This is because they help safeguard the ongoing excellence in the delivery of personalized patient care while making a major contribution to the development of the nursing profession.
