I am interested in continuing to serve in Residence life as senior staff because I want to help new RAs feel like they belong, grow and improve Residence Life, and to challenge myself to perpetuate growth. One of my personal strengths is connecting with people on an individual level. Connecting with people on an individual level is very important to me, during an Imposter syndrome lecture, the speaker mentioned “A sense of belonging fosters confidence”. This really resonated with me, my goal would be to connect with the RAs on my staff and within ResLife to help the RA’s feel like they belonged. Without a doubt life is stressful for Mines students. Being an RA, at times, can make it even more stressful. A contribution that I will lead would be the enhancement of staff social challenges. It has been confirmed over and over agin that play reduces stress and improves brain function (http://www.helpguide.org/articles/emotional-health/benefits-of-play-for-adults.htm, a really great read if you have time!). I believe there is a huge opportunity loss occurring with the lack of a weekly staff social challenges. During MLL there could be a social challenge assigned, every challenge would have the opportunity to allow RAs/HDs/CAs/CDs/RLC’s to grow closer as a team. From what I’ve previously experienced the challenges would have to be substantial and full of purpose. One of my favorite challenges was one that provided an opportunity to visit other building’s desks and socialize during desk hours. Visiting other buildings allowed RA’s to learn from each other and provide insights into each of the different areas. I sense huge opportunity to build a system that incorporates cross staff teams and creates a social challenge that people look forward to! I would make this a reality by having purposeful challenges and get constant feedback from Residence Life. Developing bonding opportunities between staffs would reduce overall tension and help alleviate
