In the 1960s, civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech about racial inequality. In this speech he explains, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee explores a community where silent racism is the center of their lives. Due to these circumstances people have created their own way of living because of this racism. Overall, in this novel, Scout has changed the most because in the beginning she was mean and curious and now she is nice and knowledgeable. In the beginning of the book Jem was truthful because he told Scout that, “Boo Radley kills people and peeps in girls windows.” (Lee 194). This shows that Jem is truthful because, he is telling Scout about what he knows about Boo. Although, these accusations are false, Jem was still being honest due to the fact that that's all that he knows about Boo. Jem has also changed because during the court case Jem states to Scout, “Shh, nothing new just the usual, hush now” During the court case Scout was asking questions about what was going on and unlike Jem in the beginning of the book, he is not being nice about what is going on. Some argue that Jem has changed the most because, in the beginning Jem was nice and truthful and now he is not as nice or truthful.
