Going to college and attaining an upper-level degree is the goal of many Americans. Unfortunately, the costs of attending a four-year university go up every year, and most people don’t have the financial means to attend. There are several different ways that a prospective student can pay for college; scholarships, grants, and financial aid are the primary means. Another way to pay for school is by joining the armed forces and using tuition assistance or the G.I. Bill to pay for school. Joining the military is one of the best ways to gain employment, job experience, and financial opportunities to pay for a college degree.
After high school, most people in America don’t have the financial means to go to college and earn a bachelors degree. While there are means to pay for school, such as scholarships, grants, and financial aid, this may not be the best route to go. While being eligible for some form of financial aid will pay for school, it also leaves the student with the debt to be paid afterwards. After certain requirements are met, every service member that serves honorable after September 11th, 2001, is eligible for the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill. The G.I. Bill has been around since the end of World War II and has changed several times since then. Most recently, the Montgomery G.I. Bill had been the primary way for service members to pay for school since 1985. In 2008, Congress enacted the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill that not only pays for the service member’s schooling, but can be transferred to dependents as well. The G.I. Bill will pay a student’s tuition directly to the school attended while also giving the student a stipend for living expenses at the same time.
