A woman named Jamie Mae Crawford returns to her hometown after being away for years, and there is a lot of speculation of what happened to her while she was gone, and Janie decides to tell the story to her childhood best friend Pheoby, which is how the novel is written.
Major Motifs and Themes:
Janie goes through three different husbands in the novel, but at the same time is and ends up being a strong independent women, and shows what it is like for Janie being in a relationship versus being independent. The Hurricane represents how chaotic and Janie life has been, and in a sense ultimately leads to her husband Tea Cake’s death (Tea Cake gets bitten by a dog with rabies during the hurricane which kills him). Throughout the novel, Janie is always striving to get a better life for herself, which in some cases meant leaving a husband who she thought was not good enough for her. This also goes back to Janie being a strong independent women.
