The Cattle Car We have finally settled into the cattle cars. We have only given a few loaves of bread and two buckets of water. These living conditions are unbearable. I’m not even sure if we’ll all survive this. We are human beings, just like them. We couldn't even all sit down because it’s so crowded. We had to take shifts standing and sitting because the cattle car was so crowded. Some of us will have to try to sleep standing up or not sleep at all because of how tightly packed we all are. There is nowhere to use the bathroom, so I can only imagine how disgusting the floor will get, not that we’re getting much food or water in the first place. We don’t even know where we’re going, or if we’re ever coming back. We have finally settled down and had accepted that we are going to be here for a while. Schächter is going mad. I must feel sympathy for her though. Her husband and two of her sons were accidentally separated from her and put on the wrong transport. The Germans said that we would get to stay with our families so they will most likely reunite them. She has nothing to worry about. Even though she should be calm, she had been screaming hysterically, but now she’s gone to another level of mad. She is currently shouting,”Fire, I see a fire!” Everyone is rushing to the window only to observe that there is no fire at all. She is only imagining things. The son that she has left is trying to calm her down and say that there is nothing to worry
