Defining Moment Project

For the next few weeks you and a partner will become better acquainted through your work on your defining moment projects. Below is an explanation of what you’ll need to do.

Step 1: Come up with an idea of a defining moment in your life. It can be about a wonderful family event such as a birth of a younger sibling, a move to another town or school, an accident, a death of a loved one, a first job, an accomplishment you worked hard to achieve. Remember that you will share with the class so don’t make it too personal.

Step 2: Write your story. It should be two pages, double-spaced.

Step 3: Pick a partner. It may not be any partner you’ve worked with before.

Remember that your goal will be to write a 3rd person paper about his or her experience using 4 direct quotes from your interview using the 20 questions. Remember to QUOTE OPINION, STATE FACT. All quotes must be opinion so the majority of your questions should begin…how did you feel, what did you think, what’s the best thing, what’s the worst thing, what’s the most embarrassing thing. If you could go back to that moment, what would you change and why or why not?

Step 6: 2 Questions—You will be required to include 2 secondary quotes from someone who knew your partner at the time and can answer questions about the defining moment. For example, if your partner wrote about moving to a new school, you might ask his or her mother how she felt her child adapted and what the best thing about the move was. Write two questions that will illicit OPINION answers and have your partner take it home, get it answered, and return it to you so you can include the quotes in your paper.
