The main character in this novel that plays an extremely important role is dead so the next one up is Cash. Cash is a very nice guy through what the reader can see. At the beginning of the novel The reader is given the scene that he is out side making his mother's coffin ever so carefully just like she would have wanted it. After her death we see that he doesn't take any time to grieve he goes straight to work he works through the rain until he gets it done. Through this we see that he is very hard working any that he does not do things lightly especial we can say for his loved ones. Chas doesn't take his duty as a son lightly as we see with building the coffin the way his mother would have wanted it but this is also seen when he blames in a way himself for not going to the bridge and checking it out before they got there.
