1. Of Mice and Men begins with a description of a picturesque woodland that surrounds the Salinas River. It is filled with rabbits, birds, and other innocent, almost “lifeless” animals. The water is described as “warm” and “twinkling.” The author's use of word choice and imagery creates a calm, idyllic setting. This represents the ideal world and life many characters in the book strive to obtain.

2. One theme Steinbeck tries to convey about human nature and life in his novel is the human desire for companionship. Curley’s wife was always seeking to converse with the farm hands because she was tired of sitting home alone all day. Even though he originally protested, Crooks eventually allowed Lennie’s company because he is lonely. This is clarified when Crooks says, “A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody.”

The climax of the novel occurs when Lennie kills Curley's wife by snapping her neck. This moment is the climax because it is the height of the major conflict and Lennie's character, and it represents his inability to change his innocently violent nature. The subsequent events are all a result of this action.

5. My favorite character from Of Mice and Men is Slim. He is the only character that is wholly content with himself. Slim acts as a role model to the other men on the ranch and they look up to him. He can called omniscient in the sense that he understands everyone's circumstances and can empathize with them.
