On April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia, Thomas Jefferson was born. His father, Peter Jefferson, was very successful as a farmer and surveyor. His mother, Jane Randolph, came from a very well known family in Virginia. At the age of 26, Jefferson was passed down a landed estate from his father. With this, he began to design and construct Monticello. Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton in January of 1772. Throughout their marriage, Jefferson and Martha had six children: Martha Jefferson Randolph, Mary Jefferson Eppes, Jane Jefferson, Lucy Elizabeth, a son, and Lucy Elizabeth.
