The “American Dream” Race has been a problem since the early nineteen hundreds. The United States has been racist since christ was born. To slaves, riots and arrests America has been against black people since the early days. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, an Nigerian author who wrote the Novel “Americanah”. Her book tells a story about an immigrant girl who came to America for a better outlook on life. Throughout the book, you will see how she struggles to achieve the true “American dream”, as the society she is living in is holding her back from doing so. Ifemelu, a young immigrant girl tries so hard to betray someone that she is not. By doing this, she believes she will become a true American who will fit into the regular social norms. Nigeria compared to United States is so different when it comes to the topic of race. Nigerians perspective is that we are all Nigerian so we are all the same. We follow under the same beliefs and culture. From America’s point of view they see a young black immigrant girl coming to America, who wants to succeed and they do want her to do so. She believes he will help and stand up for black people living in America. Since, he can relate to them. Her boyfirend dike puts it as “My president is black like me” He believes only black americans can have this feeling of power because Obama can relate to them so much. I felt like this part was important because the novel shows another black person who defeats the odds of being black and strives for excellence and power. Obama becoming president is almost a new beginning for all black Americans. They believed it could be a new beginning for blacks living in America.
