Social media is an essential part of many people’s everyday lives in this generation. People rely on social media for many different purposes and often turn to it in times of need. One may use social media for news, entertainment, or even a way to defuse awkward or boring situations. What started as ways to communicate quickly and easily has now turned into an advanced network of information, imagery, advertisements, and so on. Social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat (just to name a few) all serve unique purposes that dictate how one would use the network. All of these networks serve important purposes which lead to my ultimate decision that they should be kept. To begin, there are some harmful aspects of social media that should be addressed. As stated in the article, negatives regarding one’s intellect have not “been proved conclusively ture” (Dewey, paragraph 3). It is also said that “no study has yet demonstrated that social media is ‘rewiring’ our brains” (Dewey, paragraph 3) showing there is no solid evidence that social media has negative effects. Social media has many positive influences that some fail to see. For instance, social media plays an important role in many businesses when it comes to marketing. Without it, some companies may cease to exist or simply begin to fail. Another obvious positive is the convenience of talking to or meeting others that one would previously be unable to interact with. Depending on how one utilizes social media, the positives seems to continue whereas the negatives simply
