Our Town Quiz A community is a social group of any number whose members consist in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical age. The play Our Town by Thornton Wilder is about the fictional town of Grover's Corner, New Hampshire, that demonstrates how community plays a crucial role in minuscule societies. Wilder exhibited a few methods he used to show the significance of community in the play. One way Wilder displayed the importance of community throughout the play is by the dialogue between characters. He also emphasizes the importance of community during Act III when he shows the entirely separate community of dead souls who try to guide every new soul to make the right choices while their dead. Whether it is someone who is just saying "hello" or a person who communicates during the entire play, conversation portrays a large part throughout the novel. Thornton Wilder brings to our attention the importance of community through dialogue by the simple, what seems to be nonexistent, roles in the play. For instance, Joe Crowell Jr., the mailman has what seems to be insignificant conversations with each character he delivers mail to, when overall, the reader begins to have more knowledge about the town and the kind of community that Grover's Corner is. As Joe was talking to Dr. Gibbs, he found out that some twins were born in Polish Town, and in some way or another, the message got to multiple people in no time. In other words, just a few sentences from Joe Crowell to some of the townspeople displays to the reader the importance of community and the diverse ways a community can spread
