How Will Global Warming Change Earth From The Beach By Orrin Pilkey

How does global warming impact our world? That is the question many people ask often. As the weather becomes warmer, the ice caps at the North Pole and the South Pole begin to melt. As a result of the ice caps melting the ocean begins to rise. When the sea levels rise even just an inch or two, the whole world is altered just a little bit. People who live on land near the oceans are affected, and animals that live in the water are affected due to the climate changes caused by global warming. In the articles How Will Global Warming Change Earth from the website of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and We Need to Retreat from the Beach by Orrin Pilkey, the planet in ways such as, the rising of sea levels, the dangers, and …show more content…

Climates are changing because of global warming, and this can be very dangerous also for animals and plants “in some ecosystems, maximum daily temperatures might climb beyond the tolerance if indigenous plants or animals” (NASA, p. 658 para. 10). These heat waves can cause these creatures and plants to possibly die. Equally important, the changes in weather and climates have also affected humans in a direct manner. This results in “tropical temperature zones expanding, the reach of infectious diseases, such as malaria, will change. More intense rains and hurricanes and rising sea levels will lead to more severe flooding and potential loss of property life” (NASA, p. 659, para. 11). The dangers of this huge climate change adds more risks such as “more frequent fires will lead to more cases of heat stroke and deaths, droughts can lead to an increase in malnutrition” (NASA, p. 659, para. 12). As the sea level increases because of global warming it can also result with “hurricanes like Sandy’s immense power, which destroyed or damaged thousands of homes, actually pushed the footprints of the barrier islands along the South Shore of Long Island and the Jersey Shore landward as the storm carried precious beach sand out to deep waters or swept it across the islands” (Pilkey, p. 661, para. 2). These storms affect people who lived in Long Island and the …show more content…

The animals “to survive the extreme temperatures both marine and land-based animals have started to migrate towards the poles” (NASA, p. 658, para. 10). The warmer the earth gets the more animals will retreat towards cooler climates in order to survive. Not just the animals are in danger “as sea levels continue to rise, the surges of these future storms will be higher and even more deadly” (Pilkey, p. 660, para. 1). This means for things that live on earth will become in danger when one of these storms occur. Even though these are coast guards and warnings that help warn people, it will not be able to help with the after effects of these storms. Pilkey says that “we should also understand that armoring the shoreline with sea walls will not be successful in holding back major storm surges” (Pilkey, p. 662, para. 8). There are only so many tricks that will help prevent the lands from harm, and when those tricks and ideas run out, then storms and surges will destroy lives and
