Introduction
In the annals of history, some men have simply gone above and beyond their peers. As a young man, Alexander the Great conquered most of the known world for Greece. Leonardo da Vinci revolutionized the world of art with his paintings and sculptures, along the way redefining the world’s knowledge of human anatomy and beauty. By discovering universal scientific laws, Sir Isaac Newton forever changed the science of physics with his gravitational theories. Mental disorders of all types are destructive to any person they affect. They can be even more detrimental when they strike a pressured individual like Howard Hughes. Today, Howard Hughes mental illnesses would have been diagnosed with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and phobia disorders. Hughes’ major disorders can be classified as anxiety related. Anxiety disorders, in general terms, are psychological conditions associated with the abundant presence of anxiety and the unbeneficial behaviors with which people try to reduce anxiety (Myers 661). People with anxiety disorders are often unable to adequately cope with the daily stresses of life. Just before he arrived at the studio, Hughes had married one of his famous film starlets, Jean Peters. Despite initial feelings of love and belongingness, Hughes refused to contact his new wife at any length during his breakdown (Broeske and Brown 317). In addition to separating himself from his wife, Hughes also divorced himself from rest of the world. Hughes’ interpersonal communication during his self-inflicted exile at Nosseck’s Studio was minimal.
