Tom started as really childish but throughout the book he has matured significantly and has grown into a leader. Tom wanted to make Becky and Aunt Polly miss him. So he decides to run away and be a pirate. When he was being a pirate he took the lead and was telling Huck and Joe what to do. In this way he was only telling them what to do because he didn’t want to be alone and he needed people there with him in his plan on making Aunt Polly and Becky miss him. Tom was being foolish and led Becky into a cave and he didn't know the way around it. When he was in the cave he tried hard not to admit that they were lost, but when Tom said, “Becky, I was such a fool! Such a fool! I never thought we might want to come back! Tom really showed that he has grown up a little bit by finally admitting that he was wrong about something. Then, Tom realized that the treasure that Joe stole is hid in the cave. So Tom convinces Huck Finn to go and get the treasure with him. When he goes and gets the treasure Tom takes control and tells Huck what to do. Huck was scared that Joe’s ghost was in the cave. But Tom saw that there was a cross and knew that there couldn't be a ghost when there is a cross in there. Tom was determined to get the treasure and wouldn't let Huck quit. Tom would not stop trying until he found the treasure which shows that Tom can be a good leader when he wants to be. Next, Sid told Mr. Jones that Huck was the one who tracked the robbers to the widow’s. Tom stood and said to Sid, “Sid, there’s only one person in this town mean enough to do that, and that’s you. If you had been in Huck’s place you’d sneaked down the hill and never told anybody on the robbers. You can’t do any but mean things, and you can’t bear to see anybody praised for doing good ones.
