Reading Log: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Author Mark Twain who grew up along the Mississippi River and worked as a steamboat pilot took his experiences and incorporated them in many of his works. Through the vivid scenery of life along the Mississippi River Twain shows the true spirit of regional literature. His writing reflected what was going on during the Antebellum era and was largely influenced by the social issues of that time. In Huckleberry Finn Twain explores the values of southern culture by voicing his opinions through the character Huck, a boy who leaves his drunken father and goes on an adventure, in which he is conflicted about the rights and wrongs of society.
