The question of human nature being good or evil is one that has been thought over by many people over the course of human history. There are plenty of examples proving both sides of the question to be correct. In Golding’s Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses a group of boys crashed on an island to depict the evil within human nature. The overall evilness of human nature is also supported through Harper Lee’s to Kill a Mockingbird and Martin Luther King Jr.’s experience as an African American and how he was treated in his community.

(MLK) was an American Baptist minister and played a leading role during the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 to 1968 before he was assassinated. Being inspired by his Christian beliefs and Gandhi leading his own nonviolent protests, he led these targeted, nonviolent protests against the Jim Crow laws and other forms of discrimination. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested and sent to jail because he and others were protesting the treatment of African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama. The court had demanded that King could not hold protests in Birmingham. During 1963, it would’ve proven to be a difficult environment for many African Americans like Martin Luther King and such. Everything was segregated, from businesses to churches to libraries. African Americans faced constant discrimination and the threat of violence seemed to be in the air more often than not. In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. is shot while standing on the balcony outside his room at Lorraine Motel located in Memphis Tennessee. It is believed that the man that killed him was an escaped convict by the name of James Earl Ray. He was arrested in a London airport and plead guilty of the murder to serve 99 years in prison, so he didn’t get the electric chair. The main motivation that caused Ray to assassinate Martin Luther King Jr. can be boiled down to him and his hatred. He was known even by his own family as, “an outspoken racist who informed them of his intent to kill Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”. Ray being able to go as far as killing a man because of his skin color when he has done nothing but good for his family and friends and his community; shows the evil that human nature can
