Chase Varney Mrs. Jenkins English 10 20 December 2022 Human Nature In Lord of The Flies The book Lord of The Flies by William Golding, tells the story of a group of boys who have crashed down on a deserted island, on the way to being evacuated during a war. While on the island the boys will demonstrate true human nature as the reverberations of civilization wear off. The Lord of The Flies demonstrates human nature at its rawest and most violent state as the boys fight for survival on an isolated island. In the beginning of the story the children are in their most innocent state of mind. One example is a boy named Roger. On page 62 it says “Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them, yet there was a space round Henry perhaps six yards diameter, into which he dared not to throw, here invisible yet strong was the taboo of old life, round the squatting child was the protection of parents and policemen and the law, Rogers' arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and he was in ruins”. This is telling us that even when there are no parents or policemen or laws, he still will not throw the rock near Henry because that is what he has been conditioned to do by a civilization that is no longer there. Jack is a choir boy and in the start of the story tries asserting dominance and tries to become leader because he is the head of the choir and can sing a C sharp. How he tries to become chief shows the civilized part of him as he uses a title granted by a civil society and shows off a skill that is not useful in their situation. Later when they are exploring the jungle to see where they are, Jack finds a pig stuck in a bundle of creepers. Jack takes out the knife he brought with on the plane but hesitates to kill it and soon the pig gets free and runs off. After he promises never to hesitate again. Jack was put in charge of the hunters and had two responsibilities, get food and keep the fire going for rescue. After many unsuccessful hunts he uses paints on his face creating a mask, the mask representing savagery. He also takes all hunters off of the fire to be able to encircle his prey. However when he does this a naval ship passes by but does not see the smoke signal as the hunters did not keep the fire going. This shows Jack is more willing to quench his bloodthirst than get off the island. Later Jack will form his own tribe, as he disregarded the conch and disagreed with Ralph. If anyone disobeyed him he would tie them up and beat them. While the “beast” is on the island Jack finds a defenseless sow nursing her babies.
