Values, in general, are principals or standard of behavior we have learned from our culture, society, and family. Values in the human services career are essentials because those are the criteria that the human services professionals used to assist clients in making more productive choices. The five commonly accepted human service values that are the foundation of the human service professionals and are used on a daily basis are acceptance, tolerance, individuality, self-determination, and confidentiality. By recognizing that each person is different from the others, regardless of their age, socioeconomic and life experiences, rather than going by the heuristic view, would broaden the human services professions perspectives. Self-determination is another useful factor that human Services professional may promote and be supportive of. The ability for clients to make their own choices and finding solutions to their own problems would help to build up their self-esteem. Also, it would help them to become more confident in their decisions pertaining to their life. After all, the main human services professionals goal is it provide assisting with individual’s needs, so the individuals would become functional to the point, that they are able to help themselves. The last value that is tremendous in building a rapport with the clients, is the confidentially value. Many people chose to bottle their feeling and thoughts in and chose not to discuss those feelings because of the fear of everyone knowing their private struggle. This is why it is imperative for human services professionals to honor the confidentially value and not discuss clients cases to friends and family member, but only to supervisors or staff members that are working on the case.
