At the end of the 19th Century, as the United States was experiencing rapid industrialization, a reconfiguration of the social order yielded opposing visions of social progress. Andrew Carnegie, wealthy businessman, and Jane Addams, founder of Chicago’s Hull House, put forward different methods to achieve such progress, where Addams focuses on creating social capital in a seemingly horizontal manner while Carnegie advocates for a top-down approach. While both of them seem to reap a sense of purpose from their attempts to improve the nation, their approaches vary depending on their vision of the composition of the population they want to uplift. First, Carnegie and Addams’ desire to improve society is partly self-serving. For Carnegie, improving society is the role of the wealthy man who, “animated by Christ’s spirit” (“Wealth”), can administer wealth for the community better than it could have for itself (“Wealth”).
The founding of this organization provided a home base for those in need.
In 1853, a young minister named Charles Loring Brace became very concerned with this amount of homeless children living on the streets, so he founded the Children’s Aid Society. The Children’s Aid Society is a private, child welfare nonprofit in New York City. Brace and his team attempted
“Charitable activity of the postwar era has ‘lessening the burden of the government as its object.” Through the building and running institutions that cared for population such as the elderly, orphans, and soldiers charitable organizations after the war helped to alleviate the burden placed on the government by Reconstruction and soldier’s pensions. This institution building also led to ideas such as boards of trustees and eventually foundation philanthropy. Without the institution building of the post-war era, philanthropy would have a smaller impact on the world today and be organized less like the business sector. Emily Beeler Fletcher’s Philanthropic Work Emily Beeler Fletcher was heavily involved in community philanthropic work while
In hopes of converting as many people to Christianity, Brace couldn’t ignore the thousands of vagrant children on the dangerous and filthy streets, the cause a rise in immigrants arriving there. With good intentions in his heart, Mr. Brace along with eight other men joined the organization that is still running today, The Children’s Aid Society (CAS). This organization raised a substantial amount of funds from the public and high members of society like the Roosevelt, and Astor families. With the funds the CAS
The Salvation Army organization began in England, in1865, by William and Catherine Booth (The Salvation Army). Before the start of the Salvation Army William Booth walked the streets of London, England preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the poor, hungry, homeless and less fortunate. (Walker, 2001) The formation of the Salvation Army began due to the church leaders having disagreements with Booth by not participating in the traditional methods of the conventional concepts of the church (Walker, 2001). The Salvation Army began with Booth and his wife holding series of evangelistic meetings and services in set up tents.
Have you ever been caught in a natural disaster, losing your home, place to work, or even a friend or family member? Today there is the Red Cross and other organizations to help people survive these events, but what would you do without them? Clarissa “Clara” Barton is a hero because she founded the red cross in the U.S., helped and risked her life in the Civil War, and served as a symbol for women’s rights and support for the oppressed. Clara Barton was the founder of the red cross in the U.S, and served as its first president. Clara had the Red Cross founded after visiting Europe for rest (Redcross.org), where a treaty was signed for the Red Cross to help anyone.
Introduction The ability to help others that are in need has been around for many years and had evolved into a system of many different organizations that address multiple needs today. Without the assistance of human service organization many people would not be able to live the life that they do today. Human service organizations were not always as helpful and organized as they are today and have evolved into a much greater presence than they were many years ago. I will address how they have evolved throughout this paper and show the changes that have been made from the churches being the primary provider to how nonprofits have grown to be more involved in the overall services being provided.
Executive Summary The Salvation Army of the United States is one of the largest national providers of welfare services; operating in 128 countries worldwide, consisting of over 1.5 million members (i.e., officers, soldiers’ and adherents) (The Salvation Army USA, 2018). One of the most impacting organizations in social welfare was the settlement house. Most of them were large buildings in crowded immigrant neighborhoods where workers provided helpful services for people. Settlements aimed for their ultimate goal to be to preserve human values in a rapidly industrializing age. Every worker’s goal was to teach middle class values to the poor. They wanted to help the immigrants adjust to their new way of life.
During the Great Depression, people across the country were starving for not only food, but for some sense of hope. People were left out on the streets, unemployed, having to deal with horrible living conditions. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, trying to lead America out of the Great Depression, introduced different relief programs to not only help America become strong again, but to prevent another depression. These relief programs were used to help stop the issue with the economy, which was not doing so well during this time. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Civil Works Administration (CWA) are two examples of programs implemented to help the economy become strong.
After reflecting on all that you have learned in this course, share what you believe is one current trend in the human services field in meeting the needs of individuals, families, and/or the community. This course has been a revelation for me. In the past eight weeks, I learned many things about running a nonprofit organization, and I am sure I will learn a lot more. There are so many different elements that goes into managing an organization like how to build capacity, funding/budgeting, assessment tools, the role of the board of directors, and past/current trends in the field.
Mesilla or south Arizona had large deposits of gold and Euro-American worried that the occupation of the French and their creation of cities would make them owners of the land area. President Franklin Pierce, therefore, appointed James Gadsden to negotiate purchase as land as possible in the northern Mexico/south Arizona area. In the end, the United States literally threatened Mexico into selling g the land of more than 45000 acres for 10 million dollars. The purchase was officially signed in 1854 by president Franklin Pierce and granted the USA sovereignty of the southern tips of Arizona and some northern parts of New Mexico. The significance was once again an increment in the size of land for the United States.

In 1929, America underwent an economic crisis. It was the longest and most severe depression of the industrialized western world. This was known as the Great Depression. The cause of this tragic event was partially caused by buying stock in credit. Banks handed out loans to people but when the stock market crashed, they couldn’t pay back the loan.
