Survivor from a Hutu Death Camp - Rwanda, 1994: In 1994 there was a Rwandan genocide it all started from the assassination of Habyarimana which as a result ended the peace accords with Rwandan Civil war. There was an estimation between 500,000-1,000,000 killing just in 100 days! The Hutu tortured, incarcerated, starved to death, abused, and sadly many women were raped which led to HIV of the Tutsi Tribe.
According to James Nachtwey, this man was a Hutu. Even though he was a Hutu he was tortured because he didn 't support the Hutu death camp/ genocide. It reflects how messed up they really were. That phrase never made sense until this picture. The facial expression of this man feeling of portrayal and misery is heart wrenching. The way he holds his neck while his eyes and mouth are wide open impacts the reader in a way that isn 't explainable. The width and length of the many scars are awful. Those scars symbolizes the abuse these men and women went through. The thing that stood out the most was the missing top part of the man 's ear because it makes them aware of what is going on. It unimaginable that something foul like that happens to people in places around the world.
Not only does this picture convey so much emotion, but the photographer used many techniques to emphasize the different aspects of the photograph. He used the technique of showing the circumstance instead of telling. He also used techniques to draw readers in, like how he made it black and white which is rare nowadays. The editor also highlighted the scars and the missing part of the ear to draw attention to it. He also had a bright background so it emphasized the man and his scars. All of these techniques all contribute to the main
