710 Words3 Pages

Hypatia Hypatia was born in 355 C.E. she was the daughter of a famous mathematician and astronomer and philosopher named the Theon of Alexandria. He was famously remembered for two things, playing a role in preserving Euclid’s elements and commenting on Ptolemy’s Algemist and Handy tables. Hypatia’s father’s accomplishments were a big inspiration to her and she wanted to follow in Theon’s footsteps, so she studied hard to become the first female mathematician/astronomer just like her father. She commented on Apollo’s geometry and Diophantus’ number theory. Unfortunately those were her only works ever told in history and they were lost for a really long time so people couldn’t know about her accomplishments and was almost forgotten. In 412 C.E., Alexandria’s bishop Theophilus was killed in this time and caused the end of the Library of Alexandria since the library contained most of the books that the library holds. Before Theophilus died he was friendly with Hypatia’s ardent admirer and pupil Syneseus so she was not affected by the conflict between the religions and can continue her training for mathematics and physics. She sounds like a lucky girl to do her training without having to deal with warfare and stay in the safety of her dream teacher. Unfortunately this time of loveliness did not last long because Synesius and Theophilus mysteriously died and Hypatia did not know what was the cause of her student’s death. But these times of tolerance have also gone by without warning for Hypatia as she was brutally murdered by a gang of Christian zealots. Nobody knows why they killed her but they knew that it eas on March of 415 C.E. People heard about this mysterious murder and tried to find out who the culprit is and argued whether it should be Cyril. Believe that the people noticed that Cyril acted calm when these murders were happening especially to the first female mathematician/philosopher to be noted about in all of history but there were some that also believed that he did not notice about it because of his duties as bishopric of Alexandria which caused some very forceful arguments and possibly some deadly fights in the streets every now and then. Unfortunately nobody could find out the truth about the zealots’ purpose for killing Hypatia and is still a mysery up to today. But this expanded her name and was known as a powerful feminine symbol around the world and earned more respect from recent fans but also gained some more followers. Though technically her reptation could have been
