My idea of recreating the poem “I am Joaquin” was inspired by the class readings and lecture about marianism and machismo in Central America. I felt it would be great to transform the poem to a Central American woman’s perspective and her role in surviving the inequities engraved in society from past to present. Likewise, I believed that the history of Central America should be studied more in Chicano Studies since it is rarely talked about.
