In ancient China, going to war was an honor and a privilege to serve one's country. All men were to go to war and serve their nation and bring high honors to their family. While the men were out at war, the women were to stay home and keep the respectful name of the house by keeping up with household activities. However, one woman had a different idea about how to restore her family’s honor by joining the war. In the song “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”, the poetic devices used give the song a different meaning than the strength of these men. Because the only persona felt is a male tone, the structure has to have more swift and fluid, such as a woman or nature. Within the structure of the song, the speaker compares the men fighting in his platoon using metaphors and similes. In the refrain, the line “We are men/We must be swift as a coursing river” is a simile while the rest of the refrain “We are men /With all the force of a great typhoon/ e are men/With all the strength of a raging fire/Mysterious as the dark side of the moon” (22-29) are all metaphors. These similes and metaphors are used in the song to show that the soldiers had a standard to live up to. They had to be as graceful and strong as nature while still keeping honor as they fought in war. These lines to them mean that they are fast, strong, cunning, and hold mystery that only these men will ever know. However, women have been always compared to nature throughout history, and with the structure of the song comparing men to nature is like saying these men are the same as women because they are just like nature.
