People connect through many different types of social media. With social media, you may be friends with or follow people that you don’t know personally. Someone that you don’t know personally is called a “weak tie”. In the short story, “I’m So Totally, Digitally, Close to You” written by Clive Thompson describes what weak ties are and how we use them in our everyday lives. Weak ties are an important part of today’s society because it helps connect people, it gives them a bigger social circle, and it expands their ability to solve problems. The main idea of this short story is weak ties. Weak ties help connect people that you may not talk to everyday. Thompson states, “But where their sociality had truly exploded was in their “weak ties”--loose acquaintances, people they knew less well. It might be someone they met at a conference, or someone from high school who recently “friended” them on Facebook, or somebody from last year’s holiday party” (588). Also, it gives many people a bigger social circle because they can expand their followers to friends of their friends. Also, the more followers, or friends that you have, will help your ability to solve problems. I agree with that because of personal experiences I have that relate to that topic. An example is, last year I made an Instagram page that I could post clothes or items that I didn’t want anymore to sell to people. I named this page “Victoria’s Closet” and made this page private so that I could only allow certain people to follow it. I only allowed friends of mine to follow it or people I knew of to follow the page. The Instagram account was a success because I have sold over 20 things because of it.
