The Incredible Ida Arnold Out of all the characters in Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock, Ida Arnold is clearly the strongest. Throughout the entirety of the novel Ida Arnold proves that she has an undiminishable strength. Ida is fearless and her strength does not waiver even when she deals with Pinkie and his mental instability. When even the police have given up on the investigation of Hale’s death Ida continues to search for answers. Ida Arnold’s strength is epitomized in her perseverance to help Rose despite Rose’s refusal of assistance. Overall, Ida Arnold shows an amazing amount of strength when she is faced with difficult situations. The majority of people would be terrified to stand up to a murderous sociopath, Ida Arnold however, is not one of these people. When Ida sees how Rose is willing to throw her life away for Pinkie she becomes concerned. Ida attempts to dissuade Rose from continuing her relationship with Pinkie multiple times. Most notably Ida corners Rose in her room above Snow’s and tries to show her how deranged and unstable Pinkie is. When Rose says that she loves Pinkie Ida responds by saying, “You’re acting morbid. If i was your mother I’d give you a good hiding” (Greene 131). Ida is the only one who attempts to save Rose from the horrible decision she is making. When, Rose ends up marrying Pinkie Ida still attempts to help her. Ida still wants to save Rose from the monster that is Pinkie.When asked why she doesn’t just leave the girl alone Ida responds by saying, “She’s vexing, of course, she’s stupid, but she don’t deserve that” (Greene 243).
