Stress used to be a word reserved only for adults but the increased pressures on children and young people both inside and outside of school can lead to problems in social development and relationships. Stress factors that children and young people can be subjected to include: overscheduling, family difficulties, school and social commitments, limited active play and media influences. Children and young people tend to be more technology savvy then adults. Many children are exposed to media influences like movies, games and news programs that could be unsuitable for them. This can lead to children feeling unsafe and insecure, which in turn can affect relationship building as children may not feel ‘safe’ to develop, play and develop a sense of self with others. Young adults tend to have the majority of their relationships online on websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. These types of relationships can be pretty stressful. Cyber bullying has become a major issue in the last few years that has affected the lives of many young people. Many of these kids find these sites, feeling the need to share all their details with everyone, absorb their lives and are open for everyone to see. Children and young people may have poor nutrition, which can impact physical and psychological development leading to difficulties in maintaining or developing healthy relationships. Poor nutrition could also lead to weight gain that can affect children and young people physically and mentally. These children can become withdrawn, shy or embarrassed about their weight. They may experience bullying by other peers or not want to participate in social activities, particularly physical activities that are essential for developing healthy relationships and
