The Greeks and Romans with regards to religion according to Matt Dillon in his paper Dillon (2019), “Gods were anthropomorphic (in human form) and powerful but not eternal or all-powerful.” Both states practiced polytheism; the worship of more than one god. Where a new one can be added as required. The five Greek gods that the Romans also devoted to their own religion are Zeus (Jupiter), Apollo, Hermes (Mercury), Aphrodite (Venus), and Demeter (Ceres).
Zeus, by the Greeks, or Jupiter, by the Romans, who was also the king of the gods resides over law and order and also the god of thunder and lightning. Apollo was associated with music, poetry, and prophecy, and the power to heal. Aphrodite or Venus is the goddess of love, sex, and beauty. Hermes or Mercury is the pastoral god protecting livestock and travelers. Demeter or Ceres was the goddess of agriculture and harvest who takes care of the earth’s fertility and also the natural cycle of life and death.
