Reflective Essay: My Identity In Azerbaijan's Culture

My Identity According to Tangney, J. P. (2003) in psychology, sociology and philosophy identity is the conception, qualities , beliefs, and expressions that make a person or group different from others. I can identify myself with being a part of Azeri population with the origin of Caucasian men who lives in democratic and pure society. I am studying at International Relations faculty because of my childhood dreams. As a part of this society , I always respect others and show Azeri hospitality to other countries' citizens. Throughout its great history, Azerbaijan has been keeping its unique culture, valuable customs and traditions. As an example, men have more freedom and domination in society because of religious and traditional beliefs. In reality, we cannot compare it with 20th century of Azerbaijan but it is not completely changed. Azerbaijan constitution and laws ensure men and women have equal rights. However, lack of legal and social protection mechanisms, all women currently can not defend their rights.For example, when a girl with short skirt walk in the street people stare and upbraid her. It comes from Azerbaijan culture's patriarchal reflects which create gender inequality. Women's inactiveness in politics is the other problem of our community. Therefore, women should involve in politics and represent all women's unity. Most part of country's population are not aware of this issue especially men including me. Moreover, there are a big improvement about the role of women in family. If we compare today's women employment rate with ten years ago we can see a huge difference between them. Despite all these claims I support gender equality in society and expect that from all citizen of my country. In addition, there is another stereotype about Azerbaijan culture which is related to religion. It is true that most part of country obey Islam religion but Azerbaijan is not strict Muslim country as Iran, Saudi Arabia and etc. There is written in our constitution Azerbaijan Republic is secular country. I am not interested in religion because it restricts people's life and decrease quality of life according to my life experiences. These stereotypes of our society can be changed and every person of our society are responsible to do their best about this
