Language unites different groups of people. According to “If Black English isn’t a Language, Then tell Me, What Is?”, James Baldwin is trying to explain that even though people may speak the same language, it is going to be different based on where they come from, who they are, what they do, and the experiences they have gone through. In his essay, Baldwin tells about African slaves and how their language influenced Americans “Now, I do not know what white Americans would sound like if there had never been any black people in the United States, but they would not sound the way they sound.” (Baldwin, The New York Times July, 29 1979). The first part is “...language is also a political instruments.” Baldwin, one of the influential African-American writer of his time, this essay written in 1979, the beginning of the Past Civil Right movement, a powerful time for African-American. It was the decades best known as a new era for African-Americans with several federal acts of legislation established to protect the rights of all minority Americans. During this decade, African-Americans made great strides in politics, academic as well as business. It was the years when African-American people had a political voice. Baldwin as part of his nation wrote about how people from different countries and different nationalities survived or adapted using language as a part of communication. How we knowing, all politicians trying to make friends and influence people through the magic of language manipulation “Language is an important force in shaping the political”. (Rodgers,1998) We can compare two last presidents speeches Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Barack Obama was, as President, eloquent. His language was sophisticated. He spoke in measured tones and advanced informed, reasoned dialogue. He understood the power of language, and he chooses his words carefully to disseminate his worldview. He knew before whom he spoke and what to say. On the other hand, Donald Trump is inarticulate and brusque. His language is simplistic. Some in the media have called Trump’s speeches “word salad.” (Washington Post, 2015, Daily Beast,2017). He speaks not choosing words and phrases and it doesn't matter who his
