Igor Sikorsky and the Helicopter In the 1920s and the 1930s countless things were being tried and being discovered, and one of the most well known inventor during the 20s and the 30s was Igor Sikorsky. Igor is best well known for creating the first helicopter that could fly. Igor had to go though a lot of problems until he could achieve his goal.
Igor Sikorsky a Russian American inventor was born on the 25th of May 1889 in Kiev,Ukraine. He died on the 26th of October 1972 in Easton, Connecticut, USA. Igor Sikorsky was one of the great inventors of the 1920s and the 1930s. He was the youngest of 5 children and was homeschooled by his mother Mariya Stefanovna Sikorskaya. He started experimenting model flying machines. He was very interested in how things worked. When Igor was 12 he had already created a rubber band powered helicopter. Since Igor was a child he already had a passion to build and designing. (Woods 1979, p. 254.)
Igor started studying in Saint Petersburg Imperial Russian Naval Academy in 1903 at the age of 14. In 1906 three years after he decided that he was going to carry on with engineering. He went off to Germany with his father where he studied more about wright brothers and other engineers. In early 1912, Igor Sikorsky became Chief Engineer of the aircraft division for the Russian Baltic Railroad Car Works and in the course of 30 years he and his company built 12 aircraft designs.("Scientific Interest."
