The Enlightenment was a European movement that emphasized reason and respect for humanity. Enlightenment thinkers thought reason could solve humanity’s problems and the literature created by these Europeans greatly influenced educated Americans, including founding fathers such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Much of Enlightenment thought surrounded politics and how a proper political system should be structured. John Locke was an Englishman would argued that the state was obligated to grant natural, human rights to the people it governed. He wrote in his Two Treatises on Government that these rights included “life, liberty, and property.”
In the time of the Enlightenment Period many changes were happening in society. In the late 17th and 18th century people called The Philosophers, met in French salons and English drawing rooms to discuss what they believed in. They made many great things happen and strived their best to make what they believed in something possible. The Enlightenment Philosophers imagined they could change the ways of society in many ways. Those who were considered as general leaders of the Enlightenment years were thought to be very intellectual and were held by most people in the highest regard throughout the colonial society. Some of the more common names spoken back then were of men such as “John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison” (Sage, 2013, para. 3). The new ideas created during the Enlightenment impacted society so much that many of the ideas were utilized when forming the government of the United States. Three European men Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Rousseau each had their own unique views of what would be best for society. “Dare to know!” Enlightenment commands such as this, written by Kant, challenged traditional ways of thinking. Many Enlightenment ideals were directly interrupted by the Industrial Revolution in Britain, as seen in Dickens’ Hard Times. Kant’s desire for people to use their natural gifts, freedom publicly, and think for themselves was directly countered by Britain’s emotionless education system, the arrests of protestors, and the industrial bosses. The definition of Enlightenment has been debated ever since the creation of the term; it was difficult for contemporaries to define ‘Enlightenment ‘, so much so that in 1783 the Berlin magazine Berlinische Monattsschrift, set up a prize competition for the best answer to the question ‘What is Enlightenment?’ In the December 1784 publication, the German philosopher Immanuel Kant responded to the question with his now famous essay entitled 'Was ist Aufklärung?' ('What is Enlightenment?'). For Kant, Enlightenment was mankind's final coming of age, the emancipation of the human consciousness from the shackles of superstition and self-incurred tutelage; he epitomises this process with the Latin phrase “sapere aude” (dare to know).
