Imagine, you have a dream of a better, new life. You pursue that dream; but the only way of accomplishing that is going to a different country. When you get to that country, you decide to continue to speak only English in, perhaps, in a country that only speaks Portuguese. You have strong beliefs that your life is so much better now; but it is now a nuisance that you cannot speak the country’s native language. It is clear to see in the United States, especially Colorado, that this is an actual issue that almost everyone has to deal with on a daily basis. According to census.gov, in the U.S. nearly half of our illegal immigrant population can hardly speak English, and 13% of them don’t understand the language at all. If a United States citizen decided to move to a different country, they would, in a way, be forced to learn that Country’s native language. As for the immigrants coming to our country, that rule is not necessarily applied. These immigrants claim to be moving here for a better life, yet, they come here and expect us to change our ways for them. As i was younger, I never had an appreciation for the word “assimilation”. It was just a word that i heard over and over again in Social Studies. Now, that I am older and more aware of what is going on in the world, this word means a lot more to me. I was always taught that assimilation was when somebody moved somewhere else and had to change some of their ways to function with that society. So, as I grew up, what I did not understand was, how can you want to change your life so badly, but you are so closed- minded to change? It has always puzzled me how someone who wants change, will refuse to change. As i said before, any other country would force an American in some way to speak their language, so is our “Land of the Free” being taken advantage of? The people of this country should not be forced to change for the immigrants, the immigrants should have to adapt to our ways. We are now forced to speak Spanish, and if we don’t, it is nearly impossible to start a career. I think that it should be known as a privilege to immigrate, not a
