Whilst it can easily be argued either way whether immigration is beneficial or detrimental to the British economy I do, personally, believe that overall there’s a clear net benefit to be had from immigration. The impact immigration has on certain public sector services is just too vital to be ignored, for example the NHS. Without immigration it’s incredibly un-likely that the NHS would still even be functioning, in an efficient way. Where there to be limitations placed upon the numbers of immigrants coming into Britain the NHS would inevitably suffer as a result whether that’s from the lack of staff or the quality of staff being hired due to the necessity to fill roles quickly. Whilst it’s clear that more competition for certain jobs isn’t good for the people who are employed in those positions I think that it’s still clearly a benefit for Britain as a whole, as very rarely is more competition bad. And there is still plenty of vacant positions out there meaning there is still employment for those people who want it, although they may not be the most desirable jobs. But, on balance, as the world the world gets smaller and it gets easier to export jobs abroad I think it’s vital for Britain’s survival that we maintain, if not improve, the quality of worker that is here and whilst drastic we may need to adopt a more survival of the fittest mentality to maintain our status as one of the leading economies if the world. And this can only be done in our case by increasing the pool of skilled labour as due to laws and legislation we simply cannot compete with economies such as China in terms of price, instead, we need to compete in terms of quality. Therefore, I fully believe that placing restrictions upon immigration would be a very poor and costly decision for
