GLOBALIZATION AND THE THIRD WORLD (A LIBERALIST PERSPECTIVE)
According to Baylis, J., el (2008), globalization is the widening, deepening and speeding up of worldwide interconnectedness. Giddens, A. (1990) defines globalization as the intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa. According to Brown, G.W. (2008) it encompasses a growing interconnection between peoples, nations, cultures governments, environments, economies and indeterminate global networks that are ultimately bound by the spherical shape of the earth. The socio-political dimension of globalization has tended to influence politics at regional level, e.g. the East African countries aspire to gain regional integration based on the pillars of Social, Economic, Cultural and ultimately attain a Political Federation among the five member states.
Cultural aspect:
According to Lee, E. and Vivarelli, M. (2006), culture continues to give communities a sense of dignity, continuity, security and binds society together in spite of the changes. Cultural attributes are learned, acquired, transmitted or diffused through contact or other means of communication flow one generation to another. For example, with globalization, the loud echoing advertisement rhythms of the Coke Cola drinks can be heard across boundaries in towns, cities, and rural areas where drinking water is hard to get.
Ecological aspects:
The force of globalization in terms of technological advancement calls for exploitation of the world resources. There is a strong link between globalization and rapid depletion of natural resources and deterioration of the environment and in the urban areas there is too a problem of water pollution and waste disposal and this is as a result of urban growth which is related to globalization. To address such problems, various actors such as UNEP, International NGO’s and various Governments have to join hands to solve
