Making an Impact on The Homeless
"Who are we as human beings if we ignore the suffering of others?" (Joyce Naren). My purpose is to get a better understanding of why there are so many homeless people in the world today, how we can help those people in need, and learn what it’s like to be in their position. Homelessness has always been something I’ve been interested in. I've always had so many questions and concerns, so I decided this would be a perfect opportunity to broaden my knowledge.

Many homeless experience isolation in part due to suffering from abuse or neglect during their childhood. Children with limited social skills are more likely to get arrested, suffer substance abuse, and apply for public housing. The more adverse experiences in childhood, the greater the likelihood of developmental delays and other problems. In recent studies it has been found that one out of every three homeless people suffers from some sort of mental illness. The mental illness may have been the reason the person became homeless or they may have acquired the illness from living on the streets. As you talk to them, look in their eyes, talk to them with genuine interest, so they feel that they are valuable people like everybody else. In this way we give them a rarely experienced sense of dignity. Gaining their trust is what makes them fall for you and they feel like you’re the only chance of hope that they can find in every miserable day they pass through. There are many ways to help homeless people, some examples include bringing them food, donating clothes or a bag of groceries, volunteering at a shelter and really just about anything. Even if it is something little it will make their day. Ways to prevent homelessness could be supporting local shelters, offering mental health services, employment training, and child development services.
