ymphonicity presents Pavel and the GSA Strings
For this concert report, I attended Symphonicity (the Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach) presents “Pavel and the GSA Strings” featuring Pavel Ilyashov and the String Orchestra of the Governor’s School for the Arts. The concert was held at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Town Center, Virginia Beach. It began at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 23rd, 2014. The compositions performed were as follows: “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis” by Vaughn Williams, “Concerto No. 1 for violin and orchestra in G minor, Op. 26” by Max Bruch, and “Symphony No. 3 in Eb major, Op. 97” by Robert Schumann. In “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis”, the music seemed to be telling a story of troubled moments throughout life and finding resolve over time. 26” is in sonata form with an abrupt, intense opening and ends with an accelerando. The music then proceeds with a lively (vivace) beat, like a folk dance. The rhythm is very active and bouncy. The violin solo is very distinct and prominently heard with the full orchestra as accompaniment. The melody is conjunct with a homophonic texture. Beginning after the intermission, “Lebhaft” of “Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op.97” is a very energetic first movement following the sonata form in major tonality. The dynamics stay consistently loud (forte) throughout this piece at a fast, cheerful (allegro) tempo. The texture is homophonic with a full orchestra medium. The meter is simple quadruple. The second movement “Scherzo” of “Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op.97 gives the overall effect of gliding through the wind like a bird. The meter is simple triple with major tonality. The rhythm is active staying smooth and connected while keeping an overall moderate (moderato)
