Importance Of Annotating In The Odyssey

1408 Words6 Pages

For our annotations of The Odyssey of Homer, the teacher asked us to critically think and identify significant topics within each chapter in order to comprehend the story as a whole. Many useful tactics and resources given were to benefit us throughout the whole book. Utilizing resources such as study guides and highlighters made annotations consistent and efficient. It was required that we had at least three annotations, with critical thinking, done on each page. The purpose for this assignment was to understand the process of annotating because, for some, annotating is a new concept or a topic that was barely touched on in middle school. However, you can definitely see where I was not giving my best versus where I actually took time and effort. I like how I get to improve my annotating skills since this is my first time going through a book and having to critically think about after reading each page. I personally do not like how time-consuming it is because you are trying to finish four chapters and get three annotations onto each page in a limited amount of time. Something I liked about annotating was how smooth it went for me in some of the books. It was as if my mind kept turning its gears so that I never stopped or were stuck when annotating a page. Although, I did find it frustrating when my mind could not get to annotate a page, leaving it blank. On the other hand, I also feel like I did not meet my standards because I left some pages blank. My goals were to develop critically thought out annotations throughout the book because I feel as if it was …show more content…

We used tools such as utilizing different highlighter colors that separated topics within the book. However, the annotations I had done were better developed and critical since I had approached it in a different way, such as providing more insight than just scraping the surface. In a teacher’s perspective, I would give it a B because, even though I had been critical, it was not enough to be worthy of an A. When people look at my annotations, I want them to notice how my notes had improved since starting this assignment. The annotations were under developed and sparse throughout the chapter so the assignment shows how I changed the way annotations are done in my book in order to benefit myself. Through the annotations, they might learn how I am not critical enough yet to the extent where I can comprehend the story enough. When showing the assignment to my classmates, they had noticed lots of writing included in my book and that I stay organized. This shows how I made it easier for me to keep track of my annotations so that my assignment does not became a jumbled mess. Through this assignment, I met the standards of reading independently and cited strongly. With these standards, it allowed me to have a more critical understanding of the book. Summarizing the end of each book was a tactic that
