Annotating In The Odyssey

The teacher assigned us to simply annotate The Odyssey of Homer; however annotating is not a simple task as I learn quickly. We were annotating to help us understand the story much easier, and in order to provoke thought. Annotating, if done correctly, will make the story much more understandable, but also take much longer. This said I feel like the expectation was not the highest; being the fact that we all are freshmen and most of us have not done annotating before, it is likely this will not be our best annotations. This had an interesting effect in our books as we all tried to figure out how to annotate that would work best for us. I really enjoyed the story and even more so the way people talked and what was sociably acceptable in the time of the story. I disliked the amount of time it took to complete a chapter and this was a struggle for me to want to put that time for annotating instead of something else. I enjoyed most the feeling of accomplishment on completing the entire set of four books, and looking back over my annotations it looked much nicer than what I had so that also felt accomplishing. The most frustrating part of the assignment was finishing one book and knowing you still had more to do, especially because I did not time organize in my favor. My standards, I feel, are low and probably why I also feel like there is more I need to do, the problem is that the feeling of incompleteness is not driving me to work on it more. After chapter eight, my goal was to maintain my better work ethic and that became my most powerful diving force. I don’t think I met my standards, I feel I’ve been lazy and now I don’t have enough time to fully correct that. My goals changed after the eighth book, before I was just trying to get stuff down for a page without actually annotating. I think as a learner I need to figure something out beforehand, but also I need to observe how other people are doing it in order to base my own ethic. I feel like I’m realizing now
