To annotate sufficiently, one must follow a certain set of steps carefully and produce perceptive work. First, one must define part of the title and analyze what each part means. Next, in order to annotate, make a key to show what each highlighter or pen color represents. When annotating, do not only use a label but also explain why the situation fits the annotation. To be organized, separate each book by the sequence it is according to the summary and then explain the short summary that comes before the book. Do study guide questions to help lead the work and consider why the book is so important. Sometimes it would be difficult to grasp what Homer is attempting to tell the audience but once I figured it out, in the future, I learned from my mistakes. The most satisfying aspect of annotating any book, is seeing the assignment slowly engulf the literature in color, it inspires one to keep working and finish the book. Something frustrating about annotating however, was how repetitive some themes and symbolism could be. Themes and symbolism reoccur to show importance, but writing similar notes so often was slightly frustrating. The standards I set for myself in completing this book were extremely high because of my previous experience annotating. When someone practices an event frequently, they continue to set the bar higher in order to advance in skill. I wanted this to be a great first impression to the IB program. My goals for this assignment were to have at least three annotations per page and eventually, I adjusted my goal to have three annotations from different categories on each page. I set those goals as a way to challenge myself to find meaning in even the smallest details and I believe that I have reached those goals successfully. This assignment revealed that I am a learner that is critical about making mistakes and that I learn from those mistakes. I realized that I am an attentive learner because of the way I read in between the lines of truly consider what message Homer is trying to tell. When I was younger, I did not appreciate annotating as much as I do currently because in middle school the books analyzed were much simpler. Annotating works that are more complex now truly helps a reader understand the story.
