Chapter 1. Introduction
1.1 Introduction Community-Based Tourism is a new agenda in tourism study that involves local community, which also participate in the tourism development within their area. This concept emerged in the mid- year of 1990s (Asker, et al. 2010, p. 2). Home-stay is one of the tourism activities that are based on community involvement which has the potential to expand and develop the rural community. In order to achieve success in this programme, the parties involved, especially the hom-estay operators need to identify the steps that can bring benefits for them. Attention needs to be given towards tourists’ satisfaction so that the home-stay programme can be maintained and will be maintainable for a long period of time. Home-stay accommodation is developing rapidly in a number of localities throughout Viet Nam, have substantially contributed to the promotion of the value of local cultures and poverty-reduction efforts especially with poor and ancient villages. Duong Lam is the first-recognized ancient village in Vietnam. The ancient village has a history of about 1,200 years with many houses dating back up to 400 years. It has been recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic with many advantages for community-based tourism development. Presently the program of activities for tourists in Duong Lam is currently only stop at renting bicycles for tourists free to explore the village, catering for tourists.
