Meditation
Another effective treatment approach is meditation. Close your eyes and sit comfortably in a serene tranquil place where there is no noise or interruption. Focus on the body by inhaling and exhaling till a calming effect takes place. Let go any of stress or tension. Just breathe, let all worries go and allow love and intuition to come in. Continue this for some time, and if the mind begins to deviate, concentrate ever so more on the breathing. Stop thinking, become aware of the inner stillness and resume breathing. Narrow your life to the present and to your inner state. Soon you will feel unperturbed, untroubled and even self-reliant. And serenity will come about before you know it. The counselor should be empathetic, see things from the patient’s viewpoint as well, and not be sympathetic i.e. feeling sorry for the client. There are three main approaches used by professional counselors who specialize in psychodynamic, humanistic and behavior counseling.
Psychodynamic Approach to Counseling.
This is based on the premise that true knowledge of people and their problems is possible through an understanding particular of areas of the human mind.
These are:
The Conscious- Things that we are aware of i.e. feelings, emotions, anger, sadness, grief, delight, surprise, happiness etc.
The Subconscious- Things below conscious awareness but fairly and easily accessible. For example, a past event which was forgotten and should be brought back into the conscious mind.
The Unconscious-The area of the mind where memories have been suppressed, and are usually difficult to access. These include extremely traumatic events that have been ‘blocked off’, and require the help of a skilled
