A strategy must be developed for gathering and analyzing the information that is required to test the hypotheses or answer the research question. The research design is an objective and complete description of methodology to be employed by the researcher. The Quality and appropriateness of a design depends on the result that supports the conclusion. The careful selection of a design in combination with appropriate measurement and analysis gives the audience the confidence that the research is reliable and believable.

The first step in the research design is observing and explaining occurrences. The explanation for the research may be presented in the form of a question or as a hypothesis. The collection the information in quantitative research is what differentiates it from other types. Quantitative research is focused specifically on numerical information. Due to the fact that the research requires its conductor to use mathematical analysis to investigate what is being observed, the information collected must be in numbers.
The final step of the research revolves around using mathematics to analyze the ‘data’ collected. This is done with statistics. After statistical analysis of the results, a comprehensive answer is reached, and the results can be legitimately discussed and published. Quantitative experiments also filter out external factors, if properly designed, and so the results gained can be seen as real and unbiased.
There are numerous methods for conducting quantitative researches. Qualitative research is generally exploratory in nature; it may be preceded of followed by quantitative investigation. Qualitative research generally involves individuals or small samples, these small samples may be carefully selected, and they may not be representative of the population as a whole, but that is not necessarily an issue, because the value of qualitative research derives from authentic and case specific detail that it can encompass. The information obtained is potentially richer and deeper than that described in numbers and statistics, and can take advantage of many subtle ways of using language to express opinions, experiences and feelings.
