In “Why University Students Don’t Read: What Professors Can Do To Increase Compliance” Mary E. Hoeft questions whether why students don’t like to read the assigned textbooks. Hoeft found that it is essential to know that there is a multiple of things we can do to boost the completion of reading assignments, for the professors who consider reading completion to be the main component to schooling (qtd. in Hoft 15). Some of these things could include could giving out quizzes, supplementary assignments, and to give reminders and making it interesting at the same time. While Hoeft suggest that reading completion is a team effort between the students and faculty, the emphasis of her argument is on whether students care about what they are reading.

The author consistently cites the example of students who have grown up using the internet as an information gathering tool; She talks about how students today must be able to read and write for both the print and digital worlds, and that the “skills of reading and using technology converge as students search for information or answer questions with the Internet” (Schmar-Dobler 81). This convergence of skills is important when considering Schmar-Dobler’s earlier assertion about the nature of literacy itself changing. The author goes on to examine the model for reading comprehension, the proper strategies of which poor readers usually lack the knowledge of, and therefore tend to be thought of as a marker for identifying “strategic readers”. Strategic readers of the Internet, however, must add the skill of “navigating” in order to locate pertinent information and then take meaning from the text (Schmar-Dobler 83). Schmar-Dobler then claims that “To be adept at seeking, evaluating, and using information found on the Internet, readers must navigate through Internet text and apply their knowledge of the reading process” (Schmar-Dobler 83).
They also appear to enjoy learning the content due to their involvement. The goal of this activity was to build students reading skills by working them through the subject and allowing them to discuss amongst each other any information that relates to the subject of the reading. It is also intended to help the students think as they read. This helped enable the students understand the subject of the reading, offer their own insight, and identify words more easily. This will also allow students to identify new words and will increase their ability with word identification and reading skills.
Introduction “Every school day in the United States for the past decade, more than 3,000 students have dropped out of high school (Joftus), 2000).” This is becoming an epidemic because literacy is simply not just being able to read or write your name. The rigors for the literacy curriculum have become much more complex and require students to be able to comprehend and state their input on different reading texts from a variety of sources. A vast amount of the funds from the federal government has been targeted towards the reading for primary grades. Secondary students such as high school students may find it difficult to transition to a higher reading level because of the complexity.
The English Standards for the common core focus on “informative” text. Though this helps kids know information, most kids tune out because the subject is boring and end up not learning anything. What they focus on while teaching is how to cite evidence from passages and some other strategies this does not help them in the end
Required reading is something my peers overlook and skip straight to spark notes to pass. I believe if well written literature is studied it can be a blessing rather than a curse for the student. The reason teachers force us to read, isn’t just because it’s the standard on the syllabus. The books we have to read inspire debate, enlighten the reader, introduce us to unfamiliar points of view, and have important morals and themes.
Introduction Lenses on Reading: An Introduction to Theories and Modelsis an excellent read. The authors bring a lot of useful information to not only the field of education but to the classroom. Throughout the book, the authors provided vignettes to show theoretical models in action which gives the reader a visual of how the theoretical model can be applied. The layout of the chapters was in chronological order which is was also helpful.

Reading Indicator 5.2 Think Aloud is the researched – based reading strategy I chose to use to facilitate the reading comprehension skills while reading nonfiction literature. The strategy used for 5.2, think aloud, is teachers modeling the use of text features to increase students reading comprehension of nonfiction text. Students will observe the teacher asking specific questions about the text, illustrations, charts, and other text features to understand what the text is saying at a deeper level, and retain more information about the text. Furthermore, my objective is that, students will learn how to effectively use text features as they observe the teacher modeling the process, using the reading strategy think aloud, for students while reading a text.
While traveling towards the path of seeping knowledge and analyzing critical ideals, we’ve become absent minded towards the components that gave us the ability to read. Since reading is always a part of our everyday routine, we have lost the idea that when it comes to learning how to read, we must start from the basics. From reading a case study, to reading a letter from a loved one, comprehension, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and oral language are the six essential components of reading. Before a child develops the ability to read, they begin to develop comprehension. Comprehension can be defined as the ability to understand.

Reading strategy is a decisive, intellectual action that an individual acquires when they are reading to help build and preserve meaning. There are two reading strategies that are used mostly in schools, colleges and technical institutions and are taught in communication and study skills course which is extensive reading and intensive reading. Extensive reading is the widening of knowledge of a pointed topic through large quantity reading. It is commonly used for knowing the country and the world as a whole which increases knowledge and widens our perspective though general understanding and pleasure.
