Goal: When reading a 5th grade passage and a word is unknown, Scott will be able to use the context clues, word roots, prefixes, suffixes and inflectional ending within a passage for 3 out of 4 trials. In reading, Scott is diligently working on expanding his vocabulary words. When Scott comes to a word that he doesn’t know he is able to figure out the meaning within the context, but he doesn’t know how to pronounce the word. Adonay has made his best effort to focus at his work in the classroom. His reading has slow progress throughout the year. Although, he reads most-text specific vocabulary, he still needs to decode unfamiliar words using appropriate strategies like blending and segmentation. It is also beneficial to develop his self-correction strategy by attending to meaning while he reads a text. Adonay finds challenging to interpret a text he reads as he struggles to access independently some additional meanings from a text.
I believe that the survey presented in the Unit 2 reading assignment revealed several blind spots concerning my individual academic skills. I was startled to discover some of my individual weaknesses revealed in the survey. The survey was insightful and enlightening, as I realized that I have previously ignored some critical areas addressed. I realize that focusing on my weaknesses can compound the difficulty of achieving academic success (Bethel University, 2014). Developing my weaknesses and converting them to strengths will significantly improve the likelihood of my academic and professional success.
Elementary Methods Course Unit 2: Integrating Literacy Summary: Over the last decade or so, starting with No Child Left Behind, there has been an emphasis on mandatory state testing in reading and mathematics. The Department of Education uses student test scores to evaluate teachers and school districts. With the focus on reading and math, other content areas such as science and social studies classes have been reduced to only a few minutes each week or have completely vanished. In some districts, science and social studies can only be taught if it is integrated into reading and language arts classes.

The SAT is a standardized test based on a students’ proficiency in math, reading and writing. In recent years questions has been raised about whether or not the SAT test can be used to measure any high school students’ skills.

For the pre-test and the post-test assessment I choose the book Captain Morty Commands the Sky by Kathy Hoggan that allowed me to cover the four areas of literacy development: phonics, phonemic awareness and word study and fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Before reading the book we talked about flying, if anyone has ever flown and they knew about airports or flying. Through decoding I addressed phonics and phonemic awareness. With spelling, pouncing of words, and understanding the meaning of the words I addressed word study and fluency. Finally asking question about the book I addressed comprehension.

Strengths: As a student one of my strengths is organization. I can say I can keep my school materials and notebooks organized in a way that I and others can comprehend. The reason I can say I am organized is because, I have hardly ever had in the past or present any issues with trying to find homework or assignments because I always kept my materials for each class organized and in a place I could easily find. Another strength I have is social skills. I can believe that I communicate with others well in a group.
