The construction wastes were produced in a bulk quantity and the amount was increasing seriously every year. It is because the construction industry is one of the most important among other industries and numerous construction works will be carried out every year to satisfy the demand of the market and end user.
During new construction, renovation, and demolition of building and structures, there will be a lot of material’s debris produced in the construction industry which so called construction wastes. It may includes the materials such as asphalt, brick, concrete, masonry, lumber, shingles, roofing materials, glass, plastics, aluminium, steel, architectural elements, drywall, insulation, wiring, plumbing and electrical fixtures, vinyl and aluminium siding, corrugated cardboard, soil, rocks, tree stumps and other landscaping.
The practical construction industry of our country is deposing those C&D waste off site or on site. The majority of disposal ways are using the most traditional methods which are landfills or burn whereas only some of the construction and demolition wastes will collect and separate on site for further processing and recycling. The material that creates the most waste is concrete and aggregate which is 65.8%. Next, soil and sand are second higher in the figure which is 27%. Followed by wood materials which is 5% and brick and blocks are 1.36%. Besides, the other construction wastes are metal product with 1%, roofing materials with 0.20%. Plastic and packaging materials with 0.05% occupy the less percentage in the type of wastage in construction industry. Based on the table above, it showed the Malaysian have practice traditional method which is landfill as the main method to dispose solid waste whereas there is only 5% that Malaysian use recycled as the method of waste disposal. Generally, recycled will be more effective and efficient method to decrease the construction and demolition wastes.
