We are going to provide home activities for you as parents to do with your child. This will help build your child’s literacy skills and we will have goals and structure for your child.
Important Strategies for Reading As the person reading the first thing that it is done is find a perspective that chooses the way a person is going to react and judge an author’s story. A perspective, which varies acutely on the person, since people origin from many different backgrounds, and experiences. Margared Atwood, explains, and describes several strategies in several detail in order to provide the reader with strategies that would hopefully apply improvement. One of those strategies mentioned by Margared Atwood is Interpretation, which is what decides what people focus on when reading a story or an article of their choice.

There are many factors that can affect a child’s language and communication. Some of these factors can be positive; however, some can be negative. A cultural factor affecting emergent literacy could be children who have English as an additional language (EAL) this is because they know more of their native language than they do English and can be difficult to grasp another language at such a young age. Also some EAL children may have the knowledge of the English language and can speak the language however; their self-esteem, self-confidence and shyness could play a part in this and therefore may not be willing to use the English language. Also, EAL children may find it difficult to grasp the English alphabet.
We have heard our whole lives that reading is fundamental and in our society reading is one of the most important skills that we learn in school. Although reading skills are essential to succeed in today’s society, reading is not treated as the necessary skill that it should be. Teens are not reading like they used to. Today's society and technology has encouraged more superficial reading or even no reading at all. The digital revolution has made everything more convenient for the children of today's society.
Some ways that Literacy has played a role on my life is reading. The earliest memory of reading is sitting out on my tree house reading “Deep and Dark and Dangerous” By, Mary Downing Hahn. I remember she wrote it so creative and lifelike that I can remember a scene so theatrical that I can see it almost as if I was there, It was a scene that the main character was in her room and she described everything from the creek of her window to the cracks in her ceiling. It really intrigued me and made me a better writer and enjoy the little details about books.
Reading is an essential life skill. The ultimate goal of reading is to comprehend and make meaningful connections with text. Therefore, the development of skills needed for reading begins at an early age and progresses through stages into adulthood (Chall, 1996). Within the early stages of reading development, children begin learning and acquiring these specific skills. Moreover, many of the skills learned during early childhood are constrained skills.
The layout shows the reader the development of literacy theories from Early Theories and Models Applicable to Reading through the 21st century. It was interesting to see some of the theories overlapping each other and some of the theories were developed upon by other scholars. There has been reading since the alphabet was first created thousands of years ago, but just recently, reading has taken on a new purpose. Reading in the modern day is a way to escape from a realty, good or bad, that people live in. People all over the world are suffering in their day to day life but now reading book especially fiction book allows them to escape. This helps people get over many problems such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal thought. Many people have written about this such as Tim Gillespie.
Literature Review “Children know how to learn in more ways than we know how to teach them.” —Ronald Edmonds (1991) Each child learns in a different way, therefore if teachers are mainly focused on instructing the majority auditory/visual learners; the students who have different learning styles needs aren’t being met, which results in lack of basic skills moving forward. The idea of one instructional strategy fitting all is creating a void in classrooms; which in turn is failing to help those students struggling the most. Campbell, Helf, and Cooke, (2008) suggests a reason for some students’ ongoing lack of achievements that, “too often, students are instructed indirectly, watching and listening to the teacher or other students with little or no opportunity to actually read” (p. 268).
The development of literacy and language is a continual progress within a person. This development is one that starts from the moment a child is born (Hurst and Joseph, 2000). This development is promoted within the home environment and is extended within the early years’ classroom domain. Literacy and language development is comprised of four strands, which are listening, speaking, reading & writing. These four factors are in constant interaction together and are constantly developing within the person (Saffran, Senghas and Trueswell, 2001).
Everyone knows that reading is important, but have you ever asked yourself why is that so? Reading is one of the most beneficial and practical activities that a human being can do. Reading is the act or skill of reading and Strategy is a plan of action made to reach a goal. Reading strategy is a decisive, intellectual action that an individual acquires when they are reading to help build and preserve meaning. There are two reading strategies that are used mostly in schools, colleges and technical institutions and are taught in communication and study skills course which is extensive reading and intensive reading. Extensive reading is the widening of knowledge of a pointed topic through large quantity reading. It is commonly used for knowing the country and the world as a whole which increases knowledge and widens our perspective though general understanding and pleasure.
