The Trans-Saharan trade network was a vital factor in the affluence of Western African civilizations. In Document A, is a map of Ibn Battuta’s journey through various trade routes spreading through multiple continents during the fourteenth century. Small pictographs are drawn on the map to display the aspects of each culture that Ibn Battuta visited (Doc A). The map illustrates the extent of the Trans-Saharan Trade Network and how it connected West Africa with other regions across the globe.
During the time period of 600 CE to 1450 CE, people on the Indian Ocean sea lanes and on the Eurasian Silk Roads traded luxury items and used their new technology to help trade prosper. Although they were both trade routes, the Indian Ocean sea lanes traded overseas and the Eurasian Silk Roads were land routes. Indian Ocean sea lanes connect Southeast Asia, India, Arabia, and East Africa. The Eurasian Silk Roads connected East and West China to the Mediterranean. Trade was greatly increasing in these two trade routes around this time.
The US went through revolutionary advancements in transportation from 1800 to 1840. The transportation improvements had substantial effects on the economy and also individual development. People could now buy goods that were made in places faraway because access was easier to towns and cities and people’s experiences grew as they were able to be more mobile (309). The roads were inadequate in 1800, so the federal government funded the National Road in 1808 to establish its dedication to improve the roads in the nation and so then by 1839 the East and West would be tied together (309). Commerce was still inadequate even with the National Road funded which improved transportation.

The spread of religion, goods, and knowledge to their surrounding ethnic groups is due to to the trans-Saharan trade routes. These trade routes caused civilizations to have connections with each other, causing cultures to blend. If the trans-Saharan trade routes never existed several African countries would have never experienced cultural diffusion. Cultural diffusion helped make cultures more aware of their surrounding ethnic groups.
Transportation played a key role in allowing the Union to defeat the Confederate States of America. Transportation in the 1860’s was difficult, because it was fairly limited. Especially during the Civil War, with many people and communities wanting to use these things to transport goods or men wherever needed. One type that played a major factor were railroads, there was a major growth in the 1850’s so by 1861 there was 22,000+ miles of track in the northern states, and 9,500+ in the South (Railroads In The Civil War). Countries and town have always fought over who is to control the supply centers or railroads, but with the confederate government to slow to recognize the importance of them, they weren’t in good shape by 1963.
Railroads were also widely used forms of transportation in the north. In addition to transportation over land, river travel was also improved. The steamboat revolutionized river travel. Before the invention of the steamboat, people moved their things using river barges. However, this was very limited, as most major rivers flowed north to south, so items could not be transported from east to west.
