Water conservation The existence of water means life, from humans to the smallest things need access to water to stay alive; therefore, water is the foundation for all living things. All though, 70 % of earth crust is covered with water, only 2.5 % is fresh water of which 70 % of t that fresh water is frozen in the icecaps of Antarctica and Greenland; most of the remain is stored deep underground aquifers. There is only 1% of the world’s fresh water is accessible for direct human uses and this is the water in rivers, lakes and shallow underground water that could be taped at an affordable price. Evan for some places where lakes, rivers and streams of fresh water are available; there is no certainty it could last, simply because fresh water is unsustainable.
Saudi Arabia receives very little rain, has no rivers or lakes, and has only limited groundwater reservoirs, which are quickly depleting. With such conditions, one would think that we would come up with the best water conservation methods. Not so. We consume water at a rate that exceeds the world average, using much more water than countries with plenty and replenish-able resources. Older generations were aware of the value of water. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) repeatedly instructed Muslims to conserve water “even when sitting by a running river.” We should learn better from the environment around us; such as, the camel being the most rational water consumer in the world or, the palm tree, which survives on
